Go Inside to Reconnect with Your Company Purpose

In my last journal post, you learned ways you can unlock or uncover your purpose. We spoke about this on a personal level and asked questions such as: What do you love? What comes easily to you?

If you somehow missed it, I definitely recommend you go back and read it here. While you read it, take the time to take some notes on these questions. 

Today, I wanted to highlight how business and purpose work tandem with one another and how uncovering your purpose to exceed in business is not as hard as you may think.

Let’s start with the facts. Fact: Purpose and profit go hand in hand.  Imagine yourself at a clothing store. There are two nearly identical shirts you see. Both are the same prices except one is made with organic material the company donates a percentage back to charity. Which shirt would you choose? Most people will choose the shirt that shares resonates with their values and shares a common purpose. 

Perhaps you’ve been riding the business train for some time and forgot about this key ideology. In order to reconnect with your purpose, it's important to go back to the basics and re-evaluate your purpose statement.

Do you remember your purpose statement?

Typically, it’s a driving force for new businesses, but over time we can forget about the “mission.” If this feels all too familiar, then this is the perfect article for you. The fact is it’s never too late to reconnect in with why you started your business in the first place. So, are you ready to get reinvigorated? Recently, I read the book Vivid Vision by Cameron Herold and he shatters the concept that you need to fit your business vision into a compact 3 sentence statement. Cameron goes on to explain that when you allow yourself to explore and be bold in your visions for each area of your business, you’re able to get clearer on what it is you envision for your future. 

What’s the lesson? Don’t keep yourself or your business in a box. Grab a book and a pen and get writing.

As you write, think about what you envision for your employees, customers, vendors, community and your investors. What will they experience with your business and your brand? Why do you want them to have these experiences? Don't filter yourself. Let your pen take you on a journey of your heart, pushing logic and reason out the window. 

Exploring a bigger, bolder purpose for your business is where you connect into what you're truly capable of achieving. Don't worry about the how...it will reveal itself. This is the time to play. Return to the childlike intuition that is inside of you and let the pen (or computer) do the talking.
