Do You Hate Your Job?

Would you rather jump off the top of the building, then walk one more step through the front doors? Every time you pull into the parking lot, you feel overcome with complete disdain, knowing you have to devote 8 hours to a position that leaves you feeling empty and hollow.

You are not alone.

Many of us, including myself, have experienced this feeling of angst. Yet, in those moments, you know you talk yourself into staying because of the benefits, the bonus, and the 401k. You convince yourself it’s for your family. Yet, every night, you go home, and no one wants to be around you because all you do is complain about the day and how you can’t stand that place. You finally fall asleep, and wake up.

And repeat.

You live in this bubble of excuses. It’s all you know and you’re not sure how to get out.

What if I told you, there’s a way out?

Would you listen?

Would you be willing to take action and create a new approach to your life?

This is not for the faint of heart. It takes real work, but not the kind you do on the outside.

It takes inner work. I’m talking inside "dumbbell work for your mind." All that you see and don’t see in your life is a reflection of what’s happening in your thoughts, or as I like to call them...pings. Yet, you rarely pay attention to the pings your mind creates, because they happen so easily. You think this is the way it’s supposed to be.

But it’s not.

If you want to create a life you love, you better get ahold of what you’re letting drive on your ping highway. Because I’m here to tell you those pot holes and pings that seem like Ford Pintos will blow up your joy mindset every day. Getting your ping highway in shape for the sleek Ferraris ready to speed towards happiness takes effort.

Where do you start?

First, you have to desire this change. If you say you want a new environment, yet you don’t take any action to change it, you’re basically telling me…you really don’t want it.

I’ve said this to clients, "I can’t care more than you." It won’t work. I can’t want it so bad for you that your life turns around. You have to want it more than me in order to do the work, because it’s not easy. It takes effort to leave a job or to change it around in a way that WILL work for you.

Once you are sure the desire is there, you have to raise your awareness to catch the pings that are happening in your mind. The ones that sound like “Ford Pintos.” I’m talking about the kind of pings that sound like, “I can’t believe she got promoted, she doesn’t know anything and now she’s my boss.” Or the one that sounds like, “My life sucks, nothing I do ever works out.” Did you just hear that Pinto blow up in fumes? Hello?! Every time you have a ping that makes you feel like crap; this is the exact kind of ping we need to eliminate. This one single skill will serve you in every aspect of your life.

Then what? You have to get those red-hot Ferrari kind of pings on the road. I’m talking about the pings that sound like, “While I’m in this job, I’m going to learn as much as I can so that I’m prepped for my next opportunity.” Or, “I’m going to create an idea that challenges my leaders to think differently.” Or maybe it’s, “I’m going to begin looking for a role that aligns with my purpose beginning in Q4.”

I’m not going to sugar coat this, replacing your ping with a more positive and empowering sentiment is the hardest part of it all. Why? Because you are changing habits and behaviors that you've had for a long time. It requires awareness and that takes time. How can you transition quicker?

  1. You have to know what it is that you want. If you have a dream in your heart of a happier life, then explore it. Get quiet, get it on paper and get clear on what you want more of in your life.
  2. Push through resistance. If you’re so used to thinking up all of the reasons why you hate what you do, your mind is going to push back every time you try to think differently. This is normal. Don’t give up and push through the resistance.
  3. Commit. Stopping a “Pinto Ping” from blowing up your mind takes effort. You have to make a choice to no longer let your thoughts go driving drunk in your ping highway.

Once you practice making a new choice, perhaps daily, hourly or even by the minute you'll begin to get better at catching the pings that no longer serve you. Just be patient with yourself. You are changing months or maybe years of behavior and your brain isn’t going to be too enthused about this at first, but guess what…. you are the one that gets to choose which pings you hold onto.

If you’re ready to lose the “I hate my job” mindset and move toward a feeling of joy and happiness. You have to start with awareness. This is the only entry point toward freedom.

You got this!
