Flex Your Mind and Welcome in Awareness

Welcome, this is where you learn how to step into awareness.

You're ready to remove the blinders you have up and learn how to take back control of your mind. Almost all you do in life is subconscious. You’ve repeated similar actions and your brain automatically takes you to the road MOST traveled. This is good for a variety of reasons, most importantly because it conserves energy for your body. However, when it comes time to change a behavior or pattern that is no longer working for you, you’re out of luck.

Have you ever had a wheel out of alignment? You know the feeling, it pulls you the wrong direction. Your subconscious is like this when you want to create a new pathway. When you are ready, it's time to elevate your awareness by learning a new way to think. This is where P.E.R.2 comes into the picture.

P is for Ping.

Let's think of your brain like a computer. Every time you hit a key, you get a ping. Depending on the Google source you review, you have 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts a day. These pings are generated all day long, this is the job of your brain. Your brain doesn't care if they are “positive or negative," they are just pings. This is a great sign you’re alive! Now, imagine you have a "ping highway" full of thoughts. You are the one that gets to determine which kind of ping you choose. Do you grab onto a positive one or a negative one?

E is for Emotion.

Depending on the ping you choose, there is a corresponding feeling or emotion that comes with it. When you grab onto a positive ping, it creates an emotion…a positive emotion. This isn’t rocket science, right? But we all know…this doesn’t happen often. We tend to hold onto the negative pings, because many times, it's the road MOST traveled because we don't know another way to choose. 

Remember what I said, it goes back to the brain! We are more likely to hold onto the negative pings, because we've created well-paved roads in our brain. The brain conserves energy, so instead of thinking something new, it is going to pull you back into what you’re typically thinking about. What happens after we have chosen which ping to hold onto and now have a corresponding emotion? We have another choice...we get to choose how we move into action. 

R is for React.

How much time do you think is between an emotion and a reaction?

You're right, not much! This is the time when someone cuts you off and you instantly give them the "New Jersey salute." This is the time when your child doesn’t do what you ask for the 3rd time and lose your mind. This is the time when your partner doesn’t answer your text in a “timely” manner (according to you) and you rage text back. 

How well is this working for you? I know the answer...it's most likely not working for you at all. You end up having a lot of regret after your actions when you are in a state of reaction. This is the opposite of joy. 

How many of you are wondering if there is a way out? Yes! I’m here to share there is a better way, but it’s not without effort. Everything worth fighting for takes effort. I want to remind you to be patient with yourself. You're working on 10, 20, 30 years of old behaviors. Let's meet your way out.

R is for Respond.

What is the difference between responding vs. reacting?

There is a beautiful quote by a man named Victor Frankel that defines what it means to respond. He wrote a book called A Man’s Search for Meaning, where he recounted his time as a prisoner in the Holocaust. He was a psychiatrist and used the time to focus on understanding the psyche vs. reacting to his situation. He says, "Between stimulus and response, there is space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

A response happens when you engage your awareness about a situation. This is where you refuse to let old behaviors rule your actions. The response is your power, because you choose what you say and do. This is where you recognize the ping you’re holding onto and then the corresponding emotion. How do you put this into your day to day?

This is where the work begins. Now you have new knowledge which steps you into awareness. This is about accountability – holding yourself to a new standard. This is where you build mental dexterity. This is the foundation of everything.

When you master this, you master your life.
